About me

  • Can I live with other dogs? Potentially - Bert might be open to living with another dog. Having spent his entire life as the sole canine companion, he recently had a positive interaction with a staff member's spaniel upon arriving at the rescue. For those interested in adopting Bert, we encourage successful applicants to bring their dog for a meet-and-greet to ensure a good match between the two dogs.
  • Can I live with teenagers? Yes - 18+
  • Can I live with young children? No - Bert has only ever lived with one person and is not accustomed to being around young children. As he enters his senior years, it would be unfair to introduce him to a household with young children, as he is not familiar with that environment.
  • Do I have any medical issues? Potentially - Bert is scheduled for a health check this week, and we will update his profile following the visit. Based on our observations, Bert previously dealt with a flea infestation, which has resulted in significant hair loss on his rear end. He also has a few bald patches and pressure sores on his legs, which are common for his age. Additionally, we've noticed some signs of arthritis when he runs, but this is also expected given his senior status.
  • Can I live with cats? No - Bert cannot live with cats, as his previous owner mentioned that he is fearful of them. Since he has never been in a household with a cat, a home without one would be the most suitable environment for him.
  • Am I good on the lead? Yes - Bert walks nicely on the lead and generally stays close to your side. He may occasionally pull if he wants to head in a specific direction, particularly if he picks up an interesting scent, but overall, he is a good boy on the lead! It's important to note that Bert has never worn a harness before and is only accustomed to a collar and lead. Given his sensitive skin, the team is hesitant to introduce a harness at this time until he feels more comfortable.

Meet Bert!

Bert was brought to our rescue when his owner required major surgery and could no longer provide him with the necessary care and walks he needed. Having spent his entire life in a ground floor flat, Bert would appreciate a relaxed walk on the patio before heading out for his daily walk. It is important to note that Bert likely hasn’t had any training on stairs due to his home environment.

Having known only one person throughout his life, Bert has lived a sheltered existence. Now, in a kennel surrounded by other dogs and new faces, both canine and human, it is understandable that he feels a bit confused.

During his off-lead time with us, we have discovered that Bert’s favourite activity is playing fetch with his beloved Scooby Doo balls. He could happily engage in this activity all day and also enjoys any toys that squeak! He has a soft spot for cuddly toys as well and occasionally chooses to play with them instead.

Bert is friendly and welcoming to new people, greeting all animal welfare staff with a wagging tail and eagerly approaching for some affection.

He would thrive in a home with an owner who is knowledgeable about collies or similar breeds. A calm, non-hectic environment would be ideal for him. Given the significant changes in Bert’s life after nine years of stability, it is essential for his future adopter to be patient and understanding, allowing him the time and space he needs to adjust to his new surroundings.

Bert is a truly special boy, and it tugs at our hearts to see him in rescue. Let’s work together to find him the loving home he so desperately needs as soon as possible!
