About me

  • Can I live with other dogs? Potentially - In Cai's previous home, he shared space with a Labrador and was quite eager, often attempting to hump him. Since joining us, Cai has met a staff member's spaniel with no problems at all. We did try introducing him to another staff member's Labrador, but both dogs showed signs that they weren't quite ready to be off lead together. Considering Cai’s cluster seizure episodes that began in February 2026, we would need to undergo a few meet and greets with the successful applicant (dogs included) before moving ahead to the next stage in the process.
  • Can I live with teenagers? Yes
  • Can I live with young children? No - 12+ - Cai has never lived with young children & due to his energy, could potentially knock them over, so he would be better suited for a home with older children.
  • Do I have any medical issues? Yes - When Cai first joined us, he underwent a comprehensive health examination at the vet, and all results were clear. In his previous home, he had a seizure, which the vet suggested might have been triggered by the incorrect flea treatment. Unfortunately, in February 2026, Cai experienced six unexpected seizures (cluster seizure) one morning, unrelated to any ingestion of recent medication or toxins. He is now on a regular medication regimen to help manage these episodes. Cai was previously on Levetiracetam for his seizures, but as of the 4th June 2026, a vet has signed him off this medication. He is currently still receiving Epiphen twice daily. For more information, please contact our dog assessor and trainer, Gary Mathlin, via our email. Cai's medication is administered outside of regular hours at the Sanctuary. Potential adopters should note the dosage times: 6:30 AM and 4:45 PM. This medication may be required for life. Cai is fully vaccinated and up to date with flea and worming treatments. His next booster vaccination is scheduled for the 22nd May 2027. Although he hasn’t been neutered yet, he is still too young for the procedure, and we will follow veterinary advice regarding this, as his epilepsy could complicate anaesthesia.
  • Can I live with cats? No - Cai has never lived with a cat before & therefore, would be best suited to a cat free home
  • Am I good on the lead? No - Cai tends to pull significantly on the lead, largely due to his background as a working dog with a strong urge to run. He hasn’t had any loose lead training in the past, which likely adds to his desire for freedom. Currently, Cai isn’t the type of dog that will walk to heel, he simply wants to enjoy being off lead doing what he wants! The team has invested several weeks in loose lead training with him. Although he showed notable improvement before his seizures, he quickly reverted from walking calmly to attempting to escape his equipment in favor of running freely in our secure paddocks. This change in behavior has emerged since his cluster seizures, he was much more relaxed on walks previously and now constantly longs for off lead runs. We’re more than happy to accommodate this desire. His behaviour may also be influenced by the current environment at the sanctuary, as he seems less satisfied with lead walks and prefers extended playtime in our paddocks, particularly enjoying a game of fetch with his favourite toy - a plastic broccoli. Which he cannot bring himself to part with! Ideally, Cai would thrive in a home with a large garden where he has plenty of space to run and play fetch to his heart's content.
  • What was the reason for my surrender? Cai came to us because his elderly owners were facing health issues and could no longer care for him.
  • What am I like when I travel in a vehicle? Cai travels well in a crate inside a van. He will jump in & out without issue.
  • Do I have any fears? Not that we know of!

Meet Cai, a charming young boy ready for a new adventure!

This handsome pup hails from a working line and has a genuine enthusiasm for training. However, his attention span can be short. When he’s had enough, he playfully lets you know by grabbing his favourite toy and tossing it at you, using your head or back as a target is one of his favourite tricks! But don’t worry, he quickly shifts back to “let’s play fetch for ages!” mode. Cai is more motivated by toys than treats, though his interest can vary based on his environment and mood.

Cai would thrive with active adopters who have plenty of space and understand the needs of collies. He requires exercise, mental stimulation, enrichment, and training to flourish. This spirited boy loves living life in the fast lane, and his new family will need to keep up!

Cai knows several cuess, including “sit,” “down,” “wait,” “paw,” and “place.” He’s a real character, and the staff and volunteers adore his playful, bold spirit. After a good session of exercise and brain games, he enjoys lounging in the shade, seeking some affection, or retreating to his kennel for a well deserved break.

While Cai may not have a lot of stamina, likely due to his time in the kennel and the six cluster seizures he experienced in February 2026, he remains full of life. However, he is not quite the same dog he was when he first arrived. We genuinely hope this sweet boy finds a loving home soon.

Cai ideally needs a home with experience in managing epilepsy.
