- Can I live with other dogs? No - Hewey previously lived with a Jack Russell but was surrendered due to difficulties in cohabiting with that dog. For more details, please reach out to Gary Mathlin, our dog assessor, via our email address
- Can I live with teenagers? Yes - 18+
- Can I live with young children? No
- Do I have any medical issues? Potentially - Hewey is scheduled for a health check and booster vaccination around August 2026. Since he isn't particularly fond of the vet, the team is currently muzzle training him to ensure he feels safe and comfortable during the examination and vaccination, which is due before October 2026. He is not neutered at this time based on the vet's advice.
- Can I live with cats? No - Hewey has never lived with a cat & cannot be placed in a home with one due to his predatory drive (& breed).
- Am I good on the lead? Potentially - Hewey does well on the lead, but he does tend to pull, so he requires a strong handler. The team is working with him on this, but training has been limited due to the frequent heatwaves. For now, he’s enjoying off lead time in our secure paddocks until the weather dips below 20 degrees.
- What was the reason for my surrender? Hewey was brought to us from a home where he lived with another dog (a Jack Russell Terrier). Their relationship was unstable, leading his owners to make the tough choice to surrender him into our care.
- What am I like when I travel in a vehicle? Hewey didn’t travel frequently with his previous owners, but he successfully travelled once with us in a crate in the back of a van without any issues.
- Do I have any fears? Persons wearing caps and/or sunglasses, eye contact. In his previous home, it was noted that he could react to loud noises and wasn't comfortable with visitors he hadn’t met before. Since arriving here, he has shown some wariness towards certain individuals.
- What are my exercise requirements? Minimum of 2 hours, per day, on lead/off lead engagement, but he would happily have more given the opportunity!
Hewey is an extremely, lively 2 year old crossbreed lurcher, believed to have some collie in him due to his eye colour, with the majority of his lineage being lurcher. He’s quite the jumper and loves to leap up at people with full speed! A speedy boy, he requires a foster or adopter with 7-8 ft fencing, as he can easily jump at least 7 ft that we know of.
Hewey can be a bit nervous in new environments and is still adjusting to life in our rescue kennels. He enjoys spending time off lead in our secure fields with his favourite humans, quickly forming bonds with the animal welfare staff. He’s also a big fan of toys (he much prefers toys to treats!) and has a particular love for water, especially running taps! However, he can resource guard his toys, so further advice is available from our dog assessor, Gary Mathlin.
While he may eventually adjust to life here, we prefer to place him in an experienced foster or permanent home where he can decompress and show his true personality. We are looking for an adult only home with experience in collies or lurchers, particularly with highly strung dogs, who understand the importance of allowing a dog to come out of his shell at his own pace. You will work closely with our Dog Advisor, Gary Mathlin, so ideally, you should be located in the Torfaen, Newport, or Monmouthshire areas for this foster role.
