About me

  • Can I live with other dogs? No - Nugget is currently unable to coexist with other dogs. As he was the sole puppy in his litter, he hasn't had siblings to learn important social behaviours from during his formative years. This may be causing him to currently be reactive towards other dogs when he's out and about. For this reason, he would thrive in a home where he is the only pet. Our dog trainer and behaviourist, Gary Mathlin can provide guidance and training sessions to address his reactivity
  • Can I live with teenagers? Yes
  • Can I live with young children? No - 12+ Nugget is accustomed to having young children visit the home, but he hasn't lived with them full time.
  • Do I have any medical issues? Potentially - Nugget is suspected to have IVDD - please click the link in his main bio for more details. He began losing significant weight in a short period and would wince and cry when his sides or abdomen were touched. A thorough health check at the vet revealed that the knuckling in both of his back legs is quite concerning for a young dog of just 1 year of age. The vet indicated that in 93% of similar cases, after six weeks of crate rest and arthrocam, there can be improvement, but only time will tell. If Nugget does not show progress by February 16th, he may need to be scheduled for an MRI to further investigate his condition. For more information, please email us to request a conversation with our dog assessor. Nugget was fully vaccinated before arriving into our care. Next vaccination due 21st February 2026. He is not neutered at the moment as he is too young. Nugget is also still outstanding ear investigations into the actual ear canal, as he has a slight head shake/tilt at times but, this won't be explored until his 6 weeks crate rest has been completed - this is on vet advise.
  • Can I live with cats? No - Nugget has never lived with cats before.
  • Am I good on the lead? Yes - Nugget is a joy to walk on a lead. He doesn't pull and stays close. He may become a bit vocal upon seeing another dog, even from afar, but this behaviour can be addressed through training.
  • What was the reason for my surrender? Nugget's owner sadly had health issues & could no longer care for him anymore
  • What am I like when I travel in a vehicle? Nugget travels well in a crate inside a van & also travels nicely in the back of a standard car when secured with a seatbelt harness.

Meet Nugget, a young Dachshund mix who has been surrendered to our sanctuary, leaving behind a life he truly cherished. His arrival is a bittersweet reminder of how life can take unexpected turns. When he first got here, Nugget struggled immensely, he was terrified to leave his kennel and spent nearly all his time hiding in a corner. It was heart-breaking to watch.

Fortunately, with time and patience, Nugget adapted to kennel life and made friends with the staff and volunteers, who all describe him as a happy chappy!

Currently, Nugget is in foster care under crate rest due to his medical conditions – please refer to the medical section for more information.

As a rare singleton puppy, Nugget missed out on crucial opportunities to learn essential canine communication and coping skills from his littermates. This lack of early socialisation may lead to frustration and sensitivity to handling later in life. Because of this, we are looking for a very special adopter, preferably one with prior dog experience, as Nugget is not suitable for first time dog owners.

*Before his medical conditions showed themselves* – Nugget loved spending time in our enclosed field, playing fetch, and would eagerly bring the ball back to your feet for another throw. He also adored tug of war! He longs for the stability and love that every dog deserves, along with the guidance needed to help him thrive as the wonderful companion he has the potential to be.

This precious boy requires extra patience and care to help him adjust to his new reality. Nugget deserves a family that will embrace his uniqueness, cherish his journey, and help him rediscover the joy of companionship. We will be there to support his new family every step of the way.
