About me
- Can I live with other dogs? No - Squish previously lived with a staffy, but he tends to be quite reactive towards other dogs when out in public, especially when on lead. When Squish first arrived at the sanctuary, he was tested with a staff member's spaniel, Dylan. During the introduction, Squish displayed a lot of air snapping, so both dogs were separated with a "call off". He tends to bark and lunge on the lead when he sees or hears other dogs, but he can be called away from this distraction by using his name and treats. He responds to both “Squish” and “Axel,” the names he came in with from his previous owner. Our team is gradually working on his dog reactivity, but we’re still in the early stages of training. Because of this behaviour, Squish would unfortunately not be a good fit for a household with other dogs.
- Can I live with teenagers? Yes - 12+
- Can I live with young children? No - Due to his experiences in his previous home, Squish is not suited to living with young children. For more information, please refer to the "reason for my surrender" section
- Do I have any medical issues? Potentially - Squish visited the vet on the 12th February 2026, where it was noted that he was experiencing some discomfort in his back legs and hips. He was prescribed a four week course of Metacam to see if his mobility improved, and we observed that he appeared to be happier. He is now taking two Yumove tablets and three pumps of salmon oil daily with his breakfast. As of the 25th May 2026, we’ve noticed some stiffness returning in his back legs, and we’re currently monitoring this, as it doesn't always persist. Squish was neutered before arriving at the sanctuary and is up to date on his vaccinations, as well as flea and worming treatments. His next booster vaccination is due on the 5th November 2026.
- Can I live with cats? No - Squish has no prior experience living with cats and, according to his previous owner, he can be quite reactive to them during walks. We have seen this for ourselves with our farm cats & whilst walking past our rescue cattery. Squish also has a VERY high prey drive & will fixate if he sees a squirrel, chicken or wild rodent!
- Am I good on the lead? Yes - Squish is excellent on the lead, always staying close to your side. Occasionally, he might venture ahead, but he doesn’t pull much. He walks well on a loose lead and is highly intelligent, patiently waiting for you to open doors or gates.
- What was the reason for my surrender? For six years, Squish was a beloved member of the family, during which time his owners welcomed three children. However, one of the children was severely autistic and would sadly have unpredictable outbursts, leaving Squish feeling terrified and often retreating to a corner to get away.
- What am I like when I travel in a vehicle? Squish travels well in a crate inside a van
- Do I have any fears? Yes: Thunder & lightning, loud noises, clickers, shouting, banging doors/gates, cooling mats, treats being thrown over his head, can be head shy. It’s important for potential adopters to know that clicker training is not suitable for Squish. For more information, our dog assessor, Gary Mathlin, is available to provide guidance upon request.
Squish’s journey to us is truly heart wrenching. He arrived due to serious issues within his family home – please see the “Reason for My Surrender” section for details. Eventually, the situation became untenable, requiring Squish and the child to be kept permanently apart. They couldn’t even be in the same room, as Squish was extremely terrified and anxious. The family recognised the unfairness of the situation for both of them and made the difficult decision to surrender him to our rescue, hoping to find him a predominantly adult only home where he can truly thrive.
Squish needs a quiet, stress free environment to settle comfortably into his senior years. He has been in the kennels for around nine months, and it breaks our hearts to think he is one of our longest staying residents.
Despite his challenges, Squish is a bright and energetic boy who loves playing football and enjoys a good game of fetch. He greets everyone with a wagging tail and a joyful demeanour, showcasing his affectionate nature. He has a favourite scratch spot under his right ear, and when playing fetch, he excels at dropping the ball right at your feet or on your lap if you’re seated, no need to get up to throw it! He knows many tricks, including “sit,” “down,” “touch,” “middle,” and “place.”
While Squish is a collie, typically known for their high energy, he’s quite the opposite and is low maintenance. He treasures one on one time with his handlers and adores tummy rubs and cuddles, highlighting the love he has to give. We truly believe his favourite spot at the rescue is our socialisation room with the sofas! He is an absolutely wonderful boy!
